THE TOWN OF ILOS

“Together We Are Free”

Alendor is one of the Four Lands. It contains one old Kingdom, theKingdomofAndor. Decades ago some people came down from thekingdomofAndorto establish the city ofIlos. Once Ilos was apart of Andor, but with Andor’s kingdom dwindling throughout the decades, its reach shortened due to long forgotten reasons.

Key features of Ilos include:

Placement:

The City ofIlosis settled along the western run of theIloianRivernestled on the banks ofMonroeLakein theLandofAlendor, second from the North of the Four Lands.

Population: 350-450 adults

Population Make Up:

The City ofIlosis made up of both Human and Halfling settlers. Though the Halflings for the most part have settled along the outer city limits along the banks of the Iloian, some have settled in the city and have a House represented on the City Board of Magistrates. The majority of the humans that have settled and built Ilos are Alendorian, while there is a large population of Truendorian and even a small smattering of Cannanites from the very southern Lands.

History:

Ilos was settled by several families from various regions of the Lands who desired to have a town built upon the premise of equality and toleration of religions, philosophies, traditions, and ways of life. This equality is held in check by the various houses holding representation in all city decisions. These democratic assemblies of houses have held the original ideals of Ilos intact since its inception. Citizenship within the city ofIlosis voted upon after meeting several requirements by the Houses. All decisions made by the Houses must have ¾ majority vote. Some votes are influenced by different groups, guilds, corporations. There are twelve houses that make up the democracy of Ilos.

The Houses:

House G’don: military house, gained fame for their success in the wars against the Truendorian barbarians to the south.

House Majersic: military house, fought along House G’don in the Truendor wars

House Tobias: artisian house/Truendorian

House Olsen, merchant house, oversees the merchant trading in Ilos/Alendorian

House Hartwing, house from northern Alendor/Andor

House Hawkins, house from southern Alendor/Clement Lakes

House Wachovia, house from Truendor

House Malkier, house from northern Alendor

House Monroe, house from Alendor

House Greyhawk, house from northern Alendor

House Al’Brian, house from Alendor, house helped foundWatertown

House Canco, house from Truendor

Some of these Houses oversee various organizations and things that happen in the city, such as merchants, magic, guardians, magistrates, militia, etc. Some organizations lobby with the Houses to have things voted on, and for the most part, if the items fit into the overall mission/values of Ilos then they pass.

Military:

The Iloian military is made up of both volunteer and recruitment by draft. All the middle males of every House must enter the militia and be trained as a solider for two years, afterward, depending on House decision or personal choice, the recruits can stay on. The Iloian militia is always looking for volunteers and pays the standard rate.

Ilos is policed by a guard force of both badged police and guards and unknown police. The police force is primarily overseen by House G’Don and are well trained and known their roles and affectively keep the peace. Lawbreakers are judged by the magistrates of the town. The main magistrate is Newt Argies, and elder man who has held this position for several decades. His second and predecessor is the middle aged magistrate, Gunry Holdman.

Town Guard NPC’s

Baliff Manning, sergeant commander of the town guard

Catchpoll Hathorn, commander of the town guard (northern gate)

Catchpoll Alloway, commander of the town guard (river ports),

Town Prison

Provost McBride, keeper of the town prison. The town prison is manned by the town guard’s Watchman.

Wizard’s School

Ilos is home to a small wizard’s school founded by Headmaster VonDoloski several decades ago. VonDoloski, although viewed as obscure as most magi are, is a well known figure in Ilos and his school is well respected. Headmaster VonDoloski has two other instructors under his watch, Professor Jenkins a Truendorian mage who instructs the students in history and the various schools of magic, and Professor Hammond who teaches components and semantics.

Headmaster VonDoloski is very strict in his allowance of students. The tests to pass help weed out only the best in VonDoloski’s view, and because of the instability of magic – or so perceived by the populace in general, VonDoloski’s rigidity is a good thing.

Mars Hill

Mars Hill is an open hill in the center of the city’s market place. Mars Hill is the place where the House Representatives meet to discuss business, laws and practices for the city of Ilos. This hill is covered in a multi-colored pillared pavilion that has benches for crowds to gather in to listen, speak, and vote.

Olsen’s Trading House

House Olsen is the head of the trading consortium in Ilos. Olsen’s trade routes run from Ilos to Watertown, from Watertown to the Shire, from Ilos to Clement Lake Cities, trade routes are being established to the coast as well. All trade merchandise must pass through the Iloian Common-weigher, Stanley Scott.

Stanley Scott, Merchandise Common-weigher of Ilos

Reighly O’Neil, Gemkeeper. Reighly is the main jem/jewel worker in Ilos.

Inns:

Wolf Fang Inn. The Wolf Fang is one of four Inns in Ilos and the largest. The Wolf Fang is an Inn where Orin used to help manage. The Inn is overseen by Innkeeper Reinhardt. The Wolf Fang has stables, stable workers, kitchen staff, and good size waitstaff, a bar room and a dinning area a long with twenty rooms overseen by a housekeeping staff.

Innkeeper, Mathias Reinhardt

Underkeeper, Brion Beau’gard

Priesthood: Being a melting pot of various cultures, although dominated by Andorian/Allendorian culture, Ilos does not boast any houses of Worship, but rather respects the creation of human and Halfling kind as well as tolerates the Purifiers as well as is home to various House beliefs. If a PC is from a certain House, they will no doubt carry that House’s religious beliefs. Farmers in the community tend toward the practices of the Watertown agriculture religion. All wedding ceremonies, and burials are done, either in House or done by the Magistrates (Newt Argies/Gunry Holdman).

THE SURROUNDING AREAS…

Ilonian River

Flowing east out of the Andorian Forrest is the wide and slow Ilonian River which dumps into Monroe Lake which branches off to the southwest as the Pilgrim River and to the south east as Clement River (which moves southward forming Clement Lake). The Ilonian picks up again flowing into the ocean some ten days down river from Ilos. The Ilonian is home to several types of trout and bass and even some perch.

Monroe Lake

Monroe Lake is a vast and deep lake spanning almost 20 miles squared. Around the lake are several estate homes of the various Houses of Ilos as well as some farming communities. Monroe houses many larger types of fish and water life, including crab, turtles, and various types of birds.

Down River

Three days east on the Ilonian will bring you floating to the town Down River. Down River was formed decades ago as a halfway point for traders seeking to reach the coastal town of Britania. Down River is home to humans and Halflings.

The Ruins

A day or two journey west along the Ilonian from Ilos will bring you to the fabled ruins. Long explored by adventures and researchers the Ruins have yielded little in the way of learning about the past. While not heavily excavated, many believe there are more to these ruins than have been cultivated already.

Allendor Forrest

Three days west of Ilos lays the great southern region of the Allendor Forest. This great forest stretches over 300 miles along the Andorian Mountain ranges . Ilonians are not woodsman but several bands of loggers have made their niche in these forests building trade with Ilonian, Down River and Monroe Lake inhabitants for decades.

THE FOUR LANDS…

The Second Land, Allendor, is where the Watertown Campaign has begun. The other Lands are the Frozen Lands to the north, Truendor south of Allendor and Cannandor south of that.

Aseir/Andorian/Grandfather Mountains

The Land of Allendor is about 900 miles running north to south and is very temperate in climate. To the west, bordering Allendor are three great mountain ranges: the Aseir Mountains that begin the Frozen Lands, the Andorian Mountains and the Grandfather Mountains.

Allendor Forest

Growing from them is the vast Allendor Forest, a deep, mostly unexplored forest region that runs over 300 miles north to south and 200 miles east to west. The Al’Brian and Ilonian Rivers flow through the Forest from a great lake in the high Andorian Mountains.

The Kingdom of Andor/The Plains of Andor

To the North of Allendor is the land of Andor. Once a great Kingdom, Andor’s rule and influence was vast over Allendor. Andor Castle is fabled, located upon Andor Mountain, it over looked its kingdom.

The Lands of Fal

North east of Andor are the lands of Fal, home of brave woodsman and cold loving, sea-faring barbarians, Fal is not for the weak of heart or constitution. Fal is a wooded, mountainous region, alive with game and adventure.

Halfling Shires/Swamp Lands

East along the great Al’Brian River lies the hilly communities of the Halflings, known as the Shires. The Shires are a safe haven for Halfling folk, merchants and good people. The Al’Brian river becomes the Great Swamp lands, not well known or explored, that empties into the sea. The Great Swamps are said to be full danger and hard to explore by those who have never went there.

Clement Lake Colonies

Clement River becomes Clement Lake a vast, 100 square mile body of water that is surrounded by the Clement Lake Colonies. These Colonies are formed around five main cities: (from the North around clockwise) Caimbridge, Collensworth, Clairmount, Camelyn, and Coventry. These colonies are very well settled, industrious, religious, value knowledge and tolerance, and are very well developed. They consider themselves the more civilaized than the Kingdom of Andor, and definitely than the Shinarians! They have their own monetary system and dialect. They are said to have warred with the Tribal Plainsmen for their right to be seated around Clement Lake.

The Tribal Plains

Between Clement Lake and the Cretian Colonies to the South lye the Tribal Plains. The Plainsmen are a fierce band of tribes that dominate the Plains. They are considered barbaric to the Clement Lake Colonies even though their traditions, religion and way of life are deep, complex and not understandable to them. While every Tribe differs in beliefs, way of life, etc, and are for the most part autonomous, they do band together for common causes (warring with the Clement and Cretian Colonies, for example).

CAMPAIGN RULES…

The Watertown Campaign setting uses the core 2nd Edition Advanced Dungeons & Dragons rules, along with the expansion rules.

Magic & Magic Items

Magic is not rare, but is unusual. The people of the Four Lands accept it and even enjoy it as it is commonly used in shows, festivals and in research. For the most part, every mage is to be trained by the Wizard’s school in Ilos. If a PC wants to be play a mage class character then he will have to be either from Ilos or go there for training.
